A Man Called Ove Book Review

Happy December, Babes In The Covers!

Last week in Hawaii, I finished reading A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. And of course, I want to share with you a few take aways and see what your thoughts are on the book in the comments below.

Readability

This novel took me several chapters to really get going, but A Man Called Ove came with high recommendations by several people so I decided to push through. And I am glad I did! Once it gets going, it is an easy read no matter where you may be.

The Novel’s Story Line

A Man Called Ove is a heartwarming and poignant exploration of the human condition. With this, it leaves one laughing, crying, and reflecting on the depth of the human soul.

The novel centers around Ove, a curmudgeonly yet endearing old man who has given up on life. Through a series of events, one delves into Ove’s past and witnesses the profound impact he has had on the people around him. Backman masterfully weaves together as much humor as heartache, allowing readers to connect with the characters on a profound level.

Ove’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of friendship, community, and unexpected connections. As the layers of Ove’s personality are peeled away, one discovers a man with a complex history and a deep well of compassion beneath his grumpy exterior.

Thoughts On Writing and Theme

The narrative skillfully addresses themes of love, loss, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Ove’s journey from a seemingly isolated existence to a person whose life is enriched by the people around him is both touching and profound. Backman’s writing is both humorous and tender, creating a perfect balance that keeps the reader engaged. The novel is not just about Ove; it’s about the intricate web of relationships that shape our lives and the potential for redemption even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

My Overall Recommendation

Overall, I give A Man Called Ove a 9/10. One less because it took me several chapters to really get into it. I do highly recommend reading it, as it is a literary gem that resonates long after the last page is turned.

It teaches us that life’s greatest joys often come from the unlikeliest places and that everyone, regardless of their rough exterior, has a story worth telling. If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh, cry, and appreciate the beauty of human connections, Ove’s story is one that you won’t soon forget!
